Dept. of Occupational Therapy, Seoul National University Hospital

Objective :
We analyzed statistically the incidence and symptoms of dysphagia in the patients with various disorders.

Method :
We investigated 134 patients suffering from dysphagia referred to the Department of Occupational Therapy, S Hospital from March 2, 2009 to August 31, 2009. We analyzed ratio of sex, age, department of medicine, disorder and dysphagia symptoms according to medical records and videofluoroscopic swallowing study(VFSS) findings.

Results :
1. The ratio of male patients was 64.9% and female patients was 35.1%. The average age was 63.3±14.5, the most frequent age group was in sixties.

2. The ratio of department medicine was following : Rehabilitation Medicine 57.5%, Internal Medicine 17.9%, Neurosurgery 9.0%, Neurology 6.0%, Thoracic&Cardiovascular Surgery 3.7%, General Surgery 3.0%, Urology 0.7%, Emergency Medicine 0.7%, Otorhinolaryngology 0.7%, Orthopedic Surgery 0.7%.

3. The ratio of disorders were following : central nervous system disorders 45.5%, neurodegenerative diseases 12.7%, peripheral nervous system disorders 9.7%, neuromuscular junction disorders or myopathy 0.7%, local structural lesions 16.4%, unknown origins 2.2%, others 12.7%.

4. We found that the patients with neurodegenerative diseases and local structural lesions showed major dysfunction in oral phase. the patients with central nervous system disorders, neurodegenerative diseases and local structural lesions showed major dysfunction in pharyngeal phase. the patients with local structural lesions major dysfunction in esophageal phase.

Conclusion :
Dysphasia occurred through wide range of disorders and is referred to variety of department in a hospital. This study suggests that further studies with therapeutic approach to dysphasia focus on not only neurologic disorders but also in various disorders.
